Dubai Metro (RTA, Dubai)

BACKGROUND

Construction of Dubai Metro, one of Dubai’s prestigious and landmark project began in early 2006 and both civil & electrical works were on full steam for the Red Line Stations in the beginning of 2009 to open the metro for the public on 09.09.09. Due to this time constraint, the main contractor (Mitsubishi) & Consultant (Parsons) couldn’t plan for the electrical insulation in the stations properly. Signaling & control cables were laid without sufficient cable protection systems in place. As these cables were installed without cable conduits, initially, it became a difficult situation for them to re-lay the existing cables due to limited time constraints and cost factor.

SOLUTION

Our partner, PMA, being a pioneer in rail applications worldwide, had an excellent R&D team with whom we worked on this problem and proposed divisible conduits (PACO) and fittings. These conduits had the advantage of being installed easily even after the cables were laid. In addition, they also complied with all required parameters of cable protection such as low smoke, zero halogen, UV & fire resistance, etc. We were the only supplier to offer this product at that point in time. Above all, this solution was offered to the client at a very economical price. A trial execution was made by the client after necessary approvals were in place and upon satisfactory usage & performance; it was decided to use PACO conduits for all the metro stations.
